Train

Although this might seem the most practical way to take your bicycle a long way when you don’t want to ride it, there is a problem. To transport your bicycle on a train you need to have a bicycle licence issued by the local town council office. This is a tedious process and the applicant for a licence needs to be a resident in the area of the town council. This means that a non-resident, like someone on holiday, with a bike, can’t take it on a train.

Bus

There are plenty of long-distance buses which allow you to take your bicycle at a small fee as well as the passenger fare but you must travel on the same bus.

Taxi transport of bicycles

Rent a Bicycle

Bicycles can be rented for a few hours in tourist areas and even from some hotels.

There are also some professional “full service” providers who can arrange good bicycle rental, transport, pickup, backup service and the full works so you can have a freewheeling bicycle holiday without problems.

Can I Cycle anywhere in Sri Lanka?

Yes, you can cycle pretty much anywhere, except for the toll expressway. There aren’t any designated cycling tracks on the main road. That means you’d have to cycle with the traffic.
