Sri Lanka is not India. Formerly Ceylon, island country lying in the Indian Ocean and separated from peninsular India by the Palk Strait. It officially became Sri Lanka in 1972. It is an independent island in the Indian Ocean just southeast of the tip of the India, 880km north of the Equator. Sri Lanka is also in a strategic location near major Indian Ocean sea lanes.

The country shares maritime borders with the Maldives and India. With an area of 65,610 km². The island is somewhat larger than twice the size of Belgium or slightly larger than the U.S. state West Virginia.

Since it’s an island the only way to get in and out is by Air. Colombo International Airport (CMB) is the main point of entry for international travellers. The main airport is located in the city of Columbo. How did the country get its name?

Known to travellers by a variety of names. Ceilão, the name given to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese Empire when it arrived in 1505, was transliterated into English as Ceylon. As a British crown colony, the island was known as Ceylon; it achieved independence as the Dominion of Ceylon in 1948.

 

Is it a third world country?

According to current conditions, it falls into the ‘Developing nation’ category, not into the poor country list. This is slightly better than earlier 3rd world country standards.
