WiFi in Sri Lanka

Most coffee shops, good restaurants, fast food chain outlets and hotels offer free Wi-Fi. Just ask for the password.

The government operates a free Wi-Fi facility in certain places but only Sri Lankans with an Identity Card can access it.

A visitor can buy a SIM card at the airport, or at telecommunication bureaux, and connect to the internet. The SIM is free in some cases or costs a nominal Rs100. Some companies charge Rs200 with free data.

There is free Wi-Fi at the airport but it is unbearably slow and so don’t depend on it, unless you have plenty of time to kill while awaiting your flight. The airlines’ business class lounges have free WiFi access but you might find some websites are blocked.
