Currency Import regulations – How much cash can you bring into Sri Lanka?

Local currency (Sri Lanka Rupee-LKR) up to LKR 20,000. Foreign currencies no restrictions; however, amounts over US$15,000 – (or equivalent) must be declared on arrival. (Indian and Pakistan currencies are prohibited).

All unspent monies, which were converted from foreign currencies declared on arrival can be re-converted to original currency. You are required to produce proof of payment.

Can you use USD in Sri Lanka instead of Sri Lankan rupee?

Although some attractions are priced in USD, all will prefer payment in rupees and will make the appropriate conversion. There’s absolutely no reason to take dollars into Sri Lanka if that is not your normal currency, as you will just be paying commission rates twice.

 

Can I use Indian rupees in Sri Lanka?

The currency accepted in Sri Lanka is Sri Lankan Rupee. Since it’s a closed currency, you can only get it once you enter Sri Lanka and should exchange any remaining currency while leaving the country. Yes you can carry Indian rupees, but you can’t use it in Sri Lanka, you have to exchange with the local currency.

 

Is Sri Lanka cheaper than India?
