Photography and video- ask permission before you click

Photography is prohibited in some high-security areas and supermarkets. Ask permission before taking photographs of people, although that might get them posing instead of the natural shot you were looking for.
Street entertainers, like snake charmers – and stilt fishermen – would expect a fee.

No camera flash

Never use flash on murals inside temples and other places; it can damage them. You are not allowed to use flash at the frescoes at Sigiriya, but where there is no ban click responsibly.

Photography at places of worship

Visitors are allowed to take photos in religious places in Sri Lanka. Photography and videography are free of charge in most temples and churches. Never pose beside or in front of a Buddha statue (i.e. with your back to the statue). Such conduct is considered extremely disrespectful. Never take a photo of a monk without asking permission.

Wildlife photography

Sri Lanka has some amazing flora and fauna in its natural habitats in the national park and forests such as Yala, Kumala, Wilpathu, Gal Oya and Sinharaja. Animals such as Elephants, Leopards, Turtles, Sloth Bears, Sambar, Red Slender Loris, Blue Whales, and plenty of local and migrant birds could be spotted. So bring those high powered lenses.

Nature and events photography

Rich in its natural beauty and abundant in its events if you’re into photography this is the place for you. A train ride from Colombo to Badulla would give you enough scenery and plenty of waterfall views. The Kandy Esala Perahara is one colourful night event with parades of traditional Sri Lankan dancers, beautifully dressed elephants and dances.
